FAQ
What is Publ?
Publ is a browser-based ePub annotation and review tool for editors, proofreaders, and indie authors. Open an ePub, highlight passages, drop pins on images or page regions, write notes, and export everything as a single file to hand back to whoever edits the book.
Is Publ free?
Yes. The browser tool is free with no account required. Optional paid cloud sync and integrations are planned for later releases.
Does Publ upload my ePub files?
No. Publ is local-first — your ePub stays in your browser's IndexedDB storage on your device. Nothing is uploaded. You can clear browser storage at any time to remove all data.
How does Publ compare to Calibre or Thorium?
Calibre is an ePub library manager and Thorium is a reader; neither targets editorial review. Publ specialises in resilient annotations that survive ePub re-exports — every highlight and pin stores a CFI anchor, surrounding text, chapter reference, and a baked-in screenshot of the anchor block so notes can be re-attached after the source is edited and re-exported.
Can I export annotations to share with someone else?
Yes. Annotations export as a single self-contained JSON notes file (with screenshots embedded) that round-trips between reviewers, plus a one-way Markdown report bundle (.zip with a sibling screenshots folder) for handing changes off to the typesetter who edits the ePub source in Sigil, Vellum, or InDesign.
Which browsers does Publ support?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop. iPad is supported. Phone-sized screens are deferred — reading-review is a desktop workflow.
